Albania Leadership Telemedicine Training Program Tucson, Arizona

An Albanian delegation of 11 people traveled to Tucson, Arizona from September 25- October 2, 2010 to participate in the Telemedicine Leadership Training Program. The delegation included directors from Ministry of Health departments, Tirana and Regional Hospitals and telemedicine staff as well. The group spent time with a number of subject matter experts in telemedicine, emergency medicine, and other medical disciplines. They also participated in tours of the Arizona Telemedicine Program and other telemedicine facilities in the greater Tucson area. Overall, this was a superb opportunity for both the Albanian Delegation and the United States medical leadership to learn about each other’s systems. During the program, two very successful conferences were organized. Dr. Pellumb Pipero, our visiting professor, prepared a highly effective lecture on how Albania managed the Gerdec disaster. During an additional lecture series, both Dr. Pipero and Dr. Latifi gave presentations to a large group of students and colleagues at the Eller College of Business at the University of Arizona. Dr. Pipero discussed the new health system reform in Albania and Dr. Latifi spoke on the telemedicine program in Albania. He stated the expectations for the performance of the program and the impact it will have on overall healthcare in Albania. The leadership and delegation in Albania were able to experience firsthand the importance of telemedicine and healthcare and how it can significantly impact their country.
